Stringent Requirements

In United States, there are stringent requirements for passport photos used in official documents such as passports, ids, and driver's licenses. The passport photo must meet specific criteria.

However, there are certain exceptions for children, especially those under the age of six.

Passport Photos for Young Children

For passport photos of children, there are several exceptional provisions that depend on the child's age.

When applying for an official document for a child under six years old, the following exceptions apply to the passport photo:

• The Eyes Do Not Need to Be on a Horizontal Line.
• The Head Can Be Tilted.
• The Shoulders Do Not Have to Be Straight.
• A Neutral Expression is Not Mandatory.
• Direct Eye Contact with the Camera is Not Mandatory.
• The Mouth Does Not Have to Be Closed.

For children aged six and older, these exceptions no longer apply. Their passport photo must meet the same requirements as an adult's passport photo.
